counselling with sonia

i’m so glad you made it here

Hi, I’m Sonia. With the aim to help you manage life’s challenges with self-compassion and self-kindness, your counselling journey with me will be trauma-informed and strengths-based. Tailoring my approach around your needs, I value being welcoming and non-judgmental and creating an environment where my clients feel safe, supported and validated.

I’m a trauma-specialist counsellor and utilise a wide range of modalities to support people who have experienced prolonged trauma leading to PTSD or C-PTSD, domestic and family violence, anxiety, depression, challenges with emotional regulation, difficult life transitions and family dynamics. Supporting clients with communication and interpersonal relationships is a special interest of mine.

I believe that the therapeutic connection between counsellor and client is key factor in getting the most positive outcome from therapy. For this reason, before meeting for the first time, I offer a free and confidential 15-minute chat about your support needs and about how I work.

my approach

You are the expert in your life, and giving you the space to talk and explore, we will work collaboratively to meet your therapy needs, reinforcing your strengths and developing your skills. I will support you with psycho-education and always work to minimise harm.

I take a Person-Centred approach drawing on a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Somatic Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT),  Narrative Therapy and Motivational Interviewing, with a strong focus on trauma informed care. Read more about these therapeutic interventions here.

As an experienced trauma-sensitive yoga teacher I often incorporate mindfulness and body-based based tools and interventions in sessions to assist in emotional regulation and nervous system stabilisation. Working with the BodyMind in this way can help us to create a greater sense of embodiment and self-awareness of our nervous system and what triggers us. This awareness can help us to build a personalised toolbox of self-regulation skills that can create deep and lasting changes and create new, compassionate relationships with ourselves and others.
